History -Today

From 1900 to 1945 the City underwent important urban changes caused by another demographic increase and economic pressure which really changed radically the structure of the old city centre and of whole districts.

Today Lugano is the most important city in Canton Ticino and with its 100.000 inhabitants, it has become an important center for organization of international conference, which is famous all over Europe. Moreover the city is an important financial and cultural reference for Switzerland itself.

The financial and banking sector started its development at a moderate pace at the beginning of the 20th century and has grown at a steady pace since the sixties and the seventies. After only a few decades Lugano has become the third financial market in Switzerland.

I guess the "changed structure" of the city explains the sometimes "bizarre" road-network of Lugano and the incredible amount of one-way streets which, being new in this city, can drive you crazy behind your steering-wheel!
At least, this situation makes me prefer being pedestrian because, anyway, you can reach everything on foot.

Thanks for these informations girls...very useful for me 'cause I knew nothing about Lugano's history. Just One thing I'm not sure about...the 100.000 citizens...where the hell are they =)? It always looks so empty...Maybe I have to look around better! Cheers

“sorry girls, but you’re wrong” (as somebody said during a lecture.... :) )

Does Lugano really have 100,000 citizens?! wow! I thought they were no more than 45,000, but maybe it depends on which areas do you include in the total.

I think we can't see all the inhabitants on the street, because they are too old. I heard from a Swiss guy, that Lugano is the best place when you are old, nice view, realxing atmosphere, calm city.
